goD what i love about konishi’s writing is how dynamic both yoshino and kirishima are. there’s so many parts of their personalities that are both overly eccentric and extremely ordinary…. but it never feels dramatic or out of character for either of them. even the unexpected twists, we can be surprised but we’re not shocked at the turn of events. they show us honesty, but we are aware we are not seeing the complete picture of either of them. it makes me very excited to continue as a reader bc you really don’t know what’s going to happen!! and the execution is always… *chefs kiss*!!
also what i really love is that these characters aren’t outside (i guess??) their gender normalities. yoshino is very feminine, and she’s never tacked on this masculine roughness to show a different side of her. the things most badass about her aren’t outside the realm of what it stereotypically means to be a woman. rather, it makes her personality and mannerisms distinct. she does the dance of doing her makeup, dressing well, and taking care of her skin… and she’s well acquainted with the “woman must be seen and not heard” idea after growing up in a patriarchal system… but she’s never limited to that. in fact, she goes around those rules and is constantly making her own alternative way.
same goes for kirishima. he’s probably one of the most insanely masculine characters we’ve had for a while. he’s strong, he’s aggressive, he’s assertive, and he knows how to lead a pack. he doesn’t need prove anything, because whatever comes to mind when you hear “toxic masculinity,” he is the epitome of it… yet that’s also the difference between him and macho dudes having a d*ck-measuring competition. kirishina has confidence, is well-mannered, and he genuinely doesn’t give a shit about impressing anybody. rather, he even enjoys being someone people don’t care about. he’s not a man’s man. he’s his own person, and that’s why he can get away with being a piece of shit, while also being incredibly charming all at the same time. it’s why he works.
i really doubt we’re even done with the beginning of the story, but i really can’t wait for more. yoshino and kirishima are never boring, even when they’re doing absolutely nothing. maybe this is their love story, and maybe it isn’t– but shit, it’s going to be a hell of a story to tell anyway
